According to the Castrol Index, which ranks the performance of individual players based on a number of statistics, Germany midfielder Toni Kroos was statistically the best player at the World Cup. The Bayern Munich playmaker, who is expected to complete a move to Real Madrid any day now, achieved a near-perfect score of 9.79 out of 10 for his performances in Brazil.

As Metro notes, the Top 10 makes for interesting reading, particularly in that Argentina’s Lionel Messi didn’t make the list, while neither did Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez of Colombia. The top five is as follows:

  1. Toni Kroos, Germany, 9.79
  2. Arjen Robben, Netherlands, 9.74
  3. Stefan de Vrij, Netherlands, 9.70
  4. Mats Hummels, Germany, 9.66
  5. Thomas Muller, Germany, 9.63
