Germany Tops FIFA Rankings

Germany assumed top position in FIFA’s world rankings on Thursday after winning the World Cup for the first time in 24 years, while European rivals Spain, Italy and England paid the price for their poor performances in Brazil. Germany, which beat Argentina 1-0 in Sunday’s final to win its fourth World Cup, replaced former world champion Spain in first place. Argentina jumped three places into second, while the Netherlands soared 12 places to third, with Brazil fourth. Spain dropped to eighth, while first-round exits also led to Portugal falling to 11th, Italy dropping five to 14th, and England plummeting 10 spots to 20th. The USA fell one spot to 15th, while Costa Rica soared 12 spots to 16th and Mexico climbed two spots to 18th.
