German defender Andreas Biermann has committed suicide following a long battle with depression. The 33-year-old former Hertha Berlin and St. Pauli defender made had his struggles public after Robert Enke committed suicide in 2009 and subsequently Biermann wrote a book called Rote Karte Depression [Show depression the red card]. Though he studied psychology and vowed to help others who suffer from depression, he was unable to overcome his own battle with the illness.
