Pep Guardiola: Julian Green deserves Bayern shot

[AMERICANS ABROAD] On a Bayern Munich team featuring six German World Cup champions, plus a host of attacking stars like Arjen Robben, Xherdan Shaqiri, Franck Ribery and Robert Lewandowski, it is not realistic to expect that 19-year-old Julian Green will play this season, but his coach, Pep Guardiola, said Tuesday he expects the German-American teenager to stay for the 2014-15 Bundesliga season.

"It's never easy to be with a big club in the first squad," Guardiola said on Tuesday in a conference call with American media. "I think today he's going to stay -- we're going to see in the preseason -- but I know him. He's always training well, he's a good guy and my first idea is that he's going to stay for the rest of the season."

Green didn't sign his first pro contract last November, the same month he made his debut with Bayern Munich's first team, a two-minute appearance in the Champions League after it had clinched qualification to the knockout stage.

"He was with us in the preseason last year," said Guardiola, "and we were really impressed by his talent, his movement around the goal."

Green will be heading to the United States for Bayern's two-game series that begins with a friendly against Guadalajara July 31 in Harrison, New Jersey, and includes the club's first appearance in the AT&T MLS All-Star Game Aug. 6 in Portland, Oregon, but a knee injury could keep sidelined until the end of the week.

"But I hope he is fit and he can play as much as possible," said Guardiola.

Playing opportunities are available, at least early in the preseason, because many of the Bayern players are still on vacation following their participation in the World Cup.

"We want to make a good game and win but we are not in the best moment," Guardiola said of the All-Star Game. "Nine of the most important players on the team they are still on holidays. I know in this moment [other teams] are fitter than us."
