Manchester City romps before record Pittsburgh crowd

[INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES] English clubs made it three-for-three in the Guinness International Champions Cup as Manchester City beat AC Milan, 5-1, and Liverpool edged Olympiakos, 1-0. on Sunday. The Manchester City-Milan game drew an announced crowd of 34,347 at Heinz Field, the largest to watch a soccer game in Pittsburgh.

Montenegrin Stevan Jovetic led Manchester City with two goals. Scott Sinclair, Jesus Navas and Kelechi Ihenacho also scored for the English champions.

English World Cup player Raheem Sterling scored the only goal in Liverpool's win before 36,170 at Chicago's Soldier Field.

The start of the final sporting event at San Francisco's Candlestick Park was delayed an hour as Atletico Madrid's bus had a flat tire. Atletico beat the San Jose Earthquakes, 4-3, in a shootout after their game ended in a 0-0 tie. The game attracted a crowd of 15,556, a quarter of the crowd that turned out a day earlier across the bay in Berkeley for the Real Madrid-Inter Milan game.

1 comment about "Manchester City romps before record Pittsburgh crowd".
  1. Todd Barkhymer, July 28, 2014 at 1:38 p.m.

This is NOT the largest soccer crowd in Pittsburgh history by a long shot. Soccer thrived in Pittsburgh in the 1920's-40's. Forbes field was regularly sold out for soccer---with Aldo "Buff" Donelli being one of the big stars and attractions. Please remember that soccer in the USA didn't start with the Seattle Sounders, much as their fans would like to believe it. ;-)
