Julian Green is happy where he is

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Should he stay or should he go? At 19 and still without any Bundesliga experience, Julian Green is a longshot to play for Bayern Munich this season. But he says he is not thinking about going out on loan to get regular playing time.

“Right now," he said during a conference call on Monday, "I’m playing for Bayern Munich, and I’m happy about that. I want to stay.”

Green will get a chance in preseason as Bayern Munich is still without many of its World Cup stars, who remain on vacation. He will be with Bayern for its matches Thursday against Guadalajara in Harrison, N.J., and Aug. 6 against the MLS All-Stars in Portland.

Bayern's six German World Cup champions and Arjen Robben and Dante, who played for the Netherlands and Brazil in the World Cup third-place game, will join the team on the eve of the Portland match.

Coach Pep Guardiola said a knee injury had been bothering Green, but the young German-American said it won't keep him from playing on the trip.

“I just want to show the coach and the team that I can help them,” Green said. “If I get my chance, I’ll try my best. I’m waiting for my chance.”

Green got his chance in the final game of the World Cup, scoring minutes after coming on in overtime of the USA's round-of-16 match against Belgium.

"The goal was a great experience," he said. "The whole World Cup was a great experience, and as a 19-year-old it's very important to have that. But for me, right now everything starts new."

Green's progress at Bayern will be closely watched by U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who views Green as one of the potential cornerstones of the national team in the years to come.

“I think it’s very important to give the young guys a chance to play,” Green said. “I think we did a good job -- me or DeAndre Yedlin or John Anthony Brooks. We have a lot of young, good players, and I’m looking forward to playing with them.”

BOYD INJURY. Terrence Boyd, who returned to Germany after two seasons in Austria with Rapid Vienna, will have to sit out 10 weeks with a partial ACL tear suffered while playing for second division club Red Bull Leipzig against Queens Park Rangers.

Boyd's 20 goals for Rapid were the second most in all competitions by an American in Europe behind Aron Johannsson's 26 goals for AZ. Johannsson is also currently sidelined following ankle surgery.
