Galaxy turns out lights on Sounders

[MLS: Monday] The power went out at CenturyLink Field in the second minute, and as far as the Seattle Sounders were concerned, it should have stayed out. The Supporters' Shield leaders fell to the LA Galaxy, 3-0, in a rare Monday night MLS game that was not as close as the score indicated. The Galaxy moved into a three-way tie for third place in the Western Conference with games in hand on all the teams in the playoff zone and could still have a say in the Supporters' Shield race.

Following a power outage that left the lights out for part of the first half, the Galaxy jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 36 minutes on goals by Gyasi Zardes, Landon Donovan and Stefan Ishizaki and should have had more goals. It had a 12-3 edge in shots in the first half and 17-13 for the game. The Galaxy (6-1-3 record in its last 10 games) pressed the Sounders all over the field and was the better team at every position, especially in midfield where Brazilians Marcelo Sarvas and Juninho won their duel with Osvaldo Alonso and Gonzalo Pineda.

Donovan, who was totally ineffective in the Galaxy's 2-1 loss at Sporting Kansas City in its previous MLS game nine days earlier, assisted on the Zardes and Ishizaki goals to go along with the goal of his own in one of best performances of the season.

With Omar Gonzalez back in the Galaxy's new first-choice back four of A.J. DeLaGarza and Gonzalez in the middle and Dan Gargan and Robbie Rogers on the outside, the Galaxy comfortably held off the Sounders, who came into the game with MLS's best offense.

"We played well," said Galaxy coach Bruce Arena. "We looked sharp and, you know, it's mid-year right now. Everyone is still finding themselves. We're just beginning to get our team on the field. After a half a season of misery, having to deal with the injuries and the absences and all that, hopefully we'll get a little bit more of a solidified unit."

It didn't help the Sounders that All-Star pick Chad Marshall was a late scratch at center back after being rear-ended in a car accident on Saturday.

"We thought he was feeling better today," said Seattle coach Sigi Schmid, "then he sneezed this morning and his whole back [got spasms] so he couldn't play."

Schmid said the Galaxy was the better team.

"Landon found space on DeAndre [Yedlin] on that side," he said, "but it wasn't just him. Every player found space; all of their players had too much space. We weren't tight enough. When you give a good player that much space, they are going to show how good they are."

The loss left the Sounders tied with Sporting Kansas City for first place in the Supporters' Shield race with 38 points but the edge on total wins and two games in hand. But the manner of the loss, which ended a six-game Seattle winning streak at home, will leave Sounders' fans worrying whether the second half of the season might resemble the club's troubles late in 2013.

“It was just one of those days at the office," added Schmid. "Better to forget about it and move on.”

In his four starts this season, Dykstra went 3-0-1 with two shutouts and a 0.75 goals-against average. United will recall goalkeeper Joe Willis from the Richmond Kickers, where Dykstra had been USL PRO Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013.
