The Revs edged into the playoff tier by ending a run of futility dating back more than two months. A Drew Moor own goal gave them a 1-0 lead they nursed until the final 15 minutes, during which Lee Nguyen struck a superb free kick and then set up Kelyn Rowe for his first goal of the season.
In all of those eight losses, New England had conceded the first goal. It took the lead when a low shot by Nguyen hit Moor in the foot and ricocheted past keeper Clint Irwin into the net.
CLASH OF CONFERENCES. The Red Bulls rallied after falling behind Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium with a shrewd finish by Thierry Henry and departed with their fourth tie (1-1) in the last six games.
Joao Plata’s team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 18th minute pushed RSL in front. Javier Morales collected a partially cleared corner kick and fired a shot that Luis Robles saved, but no Red Bull player followed the ball out to Plata, who struck a sweet shot into the bottom corner from about 15 yards out.
Henry equalized 12 minutes into the second half when Tim Cahill laid a ball back to him a few yards beyond the penalty arc. The former French
international stroked a firm shot along the ground that keeper Nick Rimando, backed up nearly to his goal line, failed to reach with a desperate lunge.
TEAMS OF TIES. A 0-0 final score at Toyota Park leaves Chicago and Vancouver mired in ambiguity. The ‘Caps tied their fourth straight game and with a record of 6-4-11, are
surpassed in deadlocks only by the Fire (3-5-12). Keepers Sean Johnson and David Ousted each had two saves.
