The U.S. under-17 national team, aiming to win its fourth straight international tournament, won its second game in two days at the Copa
Mexico de Naciones in Mexico City with a 2-0 victory over Mexico 2 to clinch a berth in Wednesday's quarterfinals.
Mexico 2, a third-division all-star team, was a late replacement for
Argentina, which pulled out of the tournament following the death of Argentine federation president Julio Grondona

, who had a hat trick in the 6-0 win over China to open the tournament on Saturday, put the USA ahead 1-0 in the first minute. The second goal was scored by Orrin McKinze Gaines
in the 24th minute. Gaines joined the team from the Open Nordic Tournament in Denmark, where the U-17 "B" team finished sixth out of eight
The USA is one of four teams along with Brazil, Ecuador and Portugal to open with two wins at the Copa Mexico de Naciones, a 16-team tournament that is in its third year.
