Giuseppe Rossi: Azzurri World Cup Snub was 'Frustrating'

In an interview with ESPN, Fiorentina striker Giuseppe Rossi admits it was “frustrating” to be left out of Italy’s World Cup squad by former Azzurri coach Cesare Prandelli. The 27-year-old New Jersey native claims that despite enduring another injury-plagued season last year, he was fully fit to go to Brazil. “Not going to the World Cup was frustrating,” Rossi said. “I had worked so hard to be there. Things did not go the way I expected to, but then football doesn’t always give you joy.”

The Viola marksman, who scored 16 goals in 22 appearances last campaign, said he expects to compete for the Capocannoniere, the Serie A leading scorer award, again this year. “Last season [former Torino striker] Ciro Immobile won the Capocannoniere title and he has gone to Borussia Dortmund, so I think I’ll be fighting for that award with [Juventus striker] Carlos Tevez, [Napoli striker] Gonzalo Higuain and [Hellas Verona striker] Luca Toni.”
