[COPA MEXICO DE NACIONES] The USA moved into the semifinals of the Copa Mexico de Naciones for under-17 national teams with a 3-0 shootout win over Colombia after
their game Wednesday in Mexico City ended 1-1. Borussia Dortmund-bound
Christian Pulisic scored in his fourth straight game for the USA.
Pulisic,
who is only 15, scored in the 16th minute to give him six goals in four games and was one of three Americans to convert from the penalty spot along with
Elijah
Rice and
Danny Barbir. Edward Bolanos evened the score for Colombia in the first half.
Pulisic's cousin,
Will Pulisic, came on late in the second half for
Kevin Silva in goal. He stopped the second Colombian attempt in the shootout. The two other
shots hit the woodwork as the USA moved into the semifinals against Ecuador. Brazil will face Paraguay in Friday's other semifinal match.
Christian Pulisic, whose parents both played
soccer at George Mason, will move to Dortmund with his father as soon as all the paperwork is sorted out. He will be able to play there because he will obtain a Croatian passport. His grandfather is a
Croatian immigrant.
Why does a Croatian passport help you play soccer in Germany??
Hopefully we see Christian moving up the "U-" ladder. Would love to see him on the rosters for the big tournaments coming up over the next few years.
John D -- I think it's because of the European Union rules that allow open borders within the EU.
Ahh..ok. Thanks James.
Croatia became the latest member of the EU in 2013... so yes his having dual citizenship means he can directly get a work permit to play in any of the EU con ties, in this case Germany.
