Ibra Scores Two, Misses Two, as PSG Draws Opener

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice while missing a penalty and an open goal in Paris Saint-Germain’s eventful Ligue 1 opener against Stade de Reims on Friday, which finished 2-2 at the Stade Auguste Delaune. The big Swede opened the scoring in the 7th minute before missing a sitter set up by Marco Verratti and then a penalty on 20 minutes before goals from Prince Oniangue and Antoine Devaux put the host in front at the break. In the second half, Ibrahimovic would restore parity as his cross was palmed over the line by Reims goalkeeper Johny Placide, who had earlier saved the PSG striker’s penalty.

As the AFP points out, starting slowly is nothing new for the French champ, which has now failed to win its opening game in any of the four seasons since being bought-out by Qatar Sports Investments. Last week, Ibra scored twice as PSG beat Guingamp 2-0 to win the Champions’ Trophy, France’s traditional curtain raiser between the Ligue 1 champ and the Coupe de France holder.

After Friday’s game, PSG coach Laurent Blanc noted that his team was still missing several first-team players, including Blaise Matuidi, Maxwell, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Yohan Cabaye, and new signing David Luiz. Nevertheless, the Frenchman said: “I thought my team played well. My only reproach is that they didn’t kill the game off inside the first 20 minutes.”
