Jose Mourinho on Monday hailed new signing Cesc Fabregas, saying that the Spaniard represents Chelsea’s future, while departed midfielder Frank Lampard, currently on loan at Manchester City, represents the Blues’ past. Fabregas scored the winning goal, a fantastic solo run and finish, in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat of Hungary’s Ferencvaros on Sunday.
"Frank is the history of the club, history nobody can forget," Mourinho said. "Fabregas is the future; history is history but the future is more important at the moment." He added: “My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield."
Separately, new signing Didier Drogba twisted his ankle in Sunday’s game, leaving him doubtful for the Blues’ Premier League opener at Burnley next Monday.
