Sounders douse Fire to reach fifth final in six years

[U.S. OPEN CUP] Chad Barrett scored an early goal and Andy Rose and Kenny Cooper each tallied twice as Seattle demolished Chicago, 6-0, in a semifinal victory in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at the Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Washington, on Wednesday.

The Sounders, who swept consecutive Open Cup titles from 2009 to 2011 in their first three MLS seasons, advance to play Philadelphia in the Open Cup final Sept. 16 at PPL Park. The Union knocked off FC Dallas on penalty kicks, 4-3, Tuesday after the teams tied 1-1. FCD was bidding to reach its seventh final.

Cooper led a swashbuckling attack that pressed forward from the kickoff. In the sixth minute, he got free near the right-wing edge of the penalty area and centered a low pass that Barrett, who the Open Cup with the Fire in 2006, smashed high into the net from close range. Chicago tried to battle its way back into the game, but it struggled to find the kind of shooting opportunities the Sounders conjured up again and again.

Rose recorded the first two-goal game of his career by connecting on precise left-footed balls from former Fire midfielder Marco Pappa, who served up a  corner kick before halftime and another great cross from open play that followed a corner in the 58th minute. Not since March 22 had Rose started a game in any competition. Clint Dempsey sat out and wasn’t missed.

Any hope amongst the Fire players that they could keep the score respectable were vaporized by three more goals in five minutes. Cooper slipped a back-heel pass for Obafemi Martins to shake off a Jeff Larentowicz challenge and fire low inside the far post, and then popped up at the back post to head home a deep cross from DeAndre Yedlin, whose transfer to Tottenham Hotspur had been officially announced earlier in the day.

Cooper rounded off the rout a minute later and took over the competition's scoring lead (six goals) when sent free by a Martins reverse pass to fire yet another shot past a riddled Sean Johnson.
