[USL PRO] The LA Galaxy, which was the first MLS club to launch a second team playing in USL PRO, continues to break new ground, signing up young talent to
contracts with Galaxy II. The USL PRO club announced Wednesday it has acquired 19-year-old forward
Kainoa Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen II, giving it one of the
top-rated young Americans in Europe. Los Dos also signed 20-year-old French defender
Jason Bli on a free transfer.
The Galaxy II previously signed
Jaime Villarreal, the younger brother of
Jose Villarreal, from the Galaxy's academy program. Signing young players to
Galaxy II allows it to work with players it would otherwise be unable to sign for its first team because of roster limits. It is not clear if Bailey would have had to go through a weighted lottery
(like French-based U.S. U-20
Romain Gall did recently when he joined Columbus) if he were to have signed with an MLS club.
“The addition of Kainoa Bailey to our
roster brings a different dimension to our attack,” said LA Galaxy II head coach
Curt Onalfo. “Kainoa is a young, talented player who is very fast
in the attack and we are excited to strengthen our roster by bringing him to LA.”
Bailey played for the MLS Academy teams -- D.C. United and Real Salt Lake -- before pursuing a pro
career in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen. Bailey
was steered to Germany by former
U.S. national team star
Brent Goulet, who coached Bailey in 2012 at the now-defunct Nashville Metros of PDL.
Bailey has attended U.S. U-20 training
camps in November 2013 and in May 2014.
Bli spent the last season with L'Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien in France’s National (fourth division) League. Before the start of the USL PRO
season, Bli spent time trialing with the Galaxy II, playing at left back in the team’s inaugural match against the Fresno Fuego. Before his stint with L'Entente SSG, Bli spent a season with
Paris FC, making 11 appearances for the third division French club.
“Jason is another great addition to our roster, and we are excited to see him join the team,” added
Onalfo. “Bli is a skillful player and we are sure he will add great depth to our backline.”
