Press golazo punctuates comfortable victory

[USA-SWITZERLAND] A side volley from 25 yards by Christen Press in the 77th minute highlighted the USA's 4-1 win over Switzerland in their first-ever women's friendly in front of a sold-out crowd of 9,992 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. Megan Rapinoe gave the USA the lead in the first half, and Carli Lloyd and Abby Wambach added goals in the second half from the penalty spot.

Switzerland, which has already qualified for the 2015 Women's World Cup, scored on Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic's penalty kick in the 70th minute. The goal spoiled keeper Hope Solo's first attempt at setting a new U.S. shutout record. She is currently tied with Briana Scurry with 71 shutouts.

Goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann, one of 11 German-based players in the Switzerland, made seven first-half saves to keep the game close after Rapinoe gave the USA the lead in the 3rd minute when she shot from 22 yards deflected off Switzerland's Rahel Kiwic inside the right side of the frame.

Handballs led to the awarding of goals by Lloyd and Crnogorcevic from the penalty spot in the 56th and 70th minutes, respectively. The only goal from the run of play in the second half came in the 77th minute when Press took a short clearance, chested the ball down and fired a right-footed side volley that ricocheted off the crossbar and over line. Wambach closed out the scoring in the 87th minute when she converted a penalty kick she created on her own for her 168th goal.

Wambach had come on after halftime for Sydney Leroux, one of eight starters who will be playing in the NWSL playoffs this weekend.

After the NWSL playoffs end, the USA will be back action for two matches against Mexico on Sept. 13 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, and  Sept. 18 at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester, New York.
