UCLA cruises again, Florida State pulls away in heat

UCLA goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland, who has yet to have to make a save, tied the school record with her 38th career shutout. Sam Mewis had a goal and an assist, and forwards Taylor Smith and Darian Jenkins each scored a goal for the Bruins.
“The first half we were a little bit stagnant and slow, but in the second half we did a better job of being a little more creative,” said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. “It was tough, though, because they had a lot of numbers behind the ball, and the seams weren’t quite there that we’re used to seeing."
-- No. 2 Florida State got a goal and assist from Marta Bakowska-Mathews and Kristin Grubka and two assists from Carson Pickett in a 4-1 win over Minnesota on a sweltering Sunday afternoon at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
-- Freshman Megan Buckingham scored her first career goal in the 73rd minute of play to lift No. 4 North Carolina to a 1-0 women’s soccer victory over Ohio State before 2,422 fans at Fetzer Field. The goal was the first for the Tar Heels in 172 minutes to start the season.
-- Senior Lauren Bohaboy scored two goals and sophomore Morgan Andrews added two assists as No. 11 Notre Dame earned a 3-0 victory over Oakland in new head coach Theresa Romagnolo's regular-season debut at Alumni Stadium.
-- No. 19 UCF, whose opener at FGCU was canceled because of bad weather, edged Miami, Fla., 2-1, on a pair of goals by Tatiana Coleman in a match at the UCF Soccer Complex, where temperatures reached 106 degrees.
"I don't like to make a lot of excuses but today was pretty brutal," UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak.
-- Having to wait two extra days before opening the 2014 season when New Mexico canceled Friday's opener in the wake of a hazing investigation, No. 22 Texas Tech took little time to pull away from Oral Roberts, scoring two goals in the first 12 minutes on their way to a 5-0 victory in front of 1,811 fans, the third-largest crowd in school history, at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
-- No. 25 South Carolina push its home winning streak to 12 games, the longest in school history. with a 2-0 win over Samford on goals by junior Raina Johnson and sophomore Paige Bendell.
