Rooney Named England Captain

Roy Hodgson on Thursday named Wayne Rooney captain of England following the retirement of former captain Steven Gerrard this summer. The 28-year-old, who is also Manchester United captain, will lead a new-look England side featuring four uncapped players (Newcastle’s Jack Colback, Arsenal’s Calum Chambers, Tottenham’s Danny Rose and Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph) in a friendly against Norway on Sept. 3 and a European Championship qualifier away to Switzerland on Sept. 8. Rooney has captained the England squad on two other occasions.
