[ROUNDUP: Friday] Defending champion Notre Dame opened its season with a 2-1 win over No. 11 Marquette during the first day of the adidas/IU Credit Union
Classic.
The No. 2 Fighting Irish fell behind on a goal by
C. Nortey in the ninth minute but responded with goals from
Connor Klekota and
Leon Brown to secure the win.
“We gave them a nice present early on,” Notre Dame head coach
Bobby Clark said. “It was a good wake-up call because I felt we played well after that for the rest of the half."
In the nightcap in Bloomington,
host Indiana tied No. 6 Georgetown, 1-1.
Femi Hollinger-Janzen scored for the Hoosiers in the 26th minute, while Georgetown came back to even the score in the
58th minute on a goal by Preseason All-American
Brandon Allen.

Ryan Zinkhan scored just over a
minute into extra time to give No. 3 Virginia a 1-0 win over No. 25 Old Dominion Friday in front of 4,144 spectators at Klöckner Stadium.
Freshman
Jeff Caldwell, who will join the
U.S. U-20 national team on its trip to Argentina,
recorded a clean sheet in his first college game in goal. He recorded a pair of saves in the win. ODU keeper
Alex Tiesenhausen posted 10 saves.

No. 7 Connecticut lost its first home opener since 2006 when it fell to No. 17 Coastal Carolina, 3-2, in front of a crowd of 4,385 fans at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
Ricky Garbanzo had the winning goal and two assists to lead the Chanticleers, who were trailing 2-0 after 52 minutes.
