Terrapins rebound with impressive victory

[MARYLAND-COASTAL CAROLINA: Men] Maryland, No. 5 in last week's Soccer America Top 25 rankings, picked up its first win of the season when it held off Coastal Carolina, 3-2, on goals by Dan Metzger, Michael Sauers and Mikias Eticha before almost 5,000 fans at Ludwig Field.

“That was a great win tonight against a national contender in Coastal,” head Terrapins coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I’m proud of our team because we came off a tough loss at Louisville on Friday and came out tonight very determined. I thought we had moments where we played very well in the game and scored some nice goals. I have to credit Coastal because I thought we played well defensively and they still scored two goals.”

Metzger, a Soccer America Preseason All-American, put the Terrapins ahead after only eight minutes when he connected on a Mael Corboz corner kick to give Maryland the early advantage.

Bryce Follensbee scored the first of his two goals for Coastal off a free kick by Elis Bjornsson to beat Maryland keeper Zack Steffen and even the score in the 59th minute.

Sauers scored with blast from 30 yards three minutes later and Eticha provided the Terps with a two-goal cushion 10 minutes after that.

Follensbee responded with his second goal, but Coastal, which had come back from down goals down to win at UConn, 3-2, on Friday, could not get the equalizer.
