Sounders get separation, Dwyer gets scoring record

[MLS: Friday] If the Seattle Sounders go on to win their first Supporters' Shield, they may look back on sub Andy Rose's stoppage-time winner in their 3-2 victory over Real Salt Lake on Friday night as the difference. Dom Dwyer set Sporting Kansas City's single-season scoring record with his 19th goal of the season in its 4-0 win at Chivas USA. The game, which drew an announced crowd of 3,933 fans, came only hours after an SI.com report that MLS might sit out the 2015 season, pending the club's sale by MLS to new owners.

If the Seattle Sounders go on to win their first Supporters' Shield, they may look back to sub Andy Rose's stoppage-time winner in their 3-2 victory over Real Salt Lake on Friday night as the difference.

Despite playing with a man advantage for the last 22 minutes, the Sounders looked destined to settle for a tie with RSL, but Rose fired DeAndre Yedlin's knockdown past Nick Rimando for the winner four minutes into stoppage time.

The winner had none of the beauty of some of the game's early goals -- notably Lamar Neagle's blast from 25 yards to even the score at 1-1 -- but it gave the Sounders the three points that opened up a four-point lead over the Galaxy and eight-point cushion on RSL, which has played one more game.

"We said at the beginning of the season that we are a team that is going to play from minute 1 through minute 90 or 95," said Seattle coach Sigi Schmid. "That's something we have showed off and we showed it again tonight. It's tremendous to get the three points. It was a big win for us in terms of separation and terms of staying in first place and continuing to push for the Supporters' Shield."

RSL was forced to play with 10 men after Nat Borchers was issued a red card for professional foul on Obafemi Martins in the 68th minute. Borchers admitted it was a red card.

"I felt with Obafemi being alone on goal I just had to make a decision there," he said, "so obviously in retrospect if we get out of here with a point, it's the right decision. Since we don't, [it was the] wrong decision, for sure."

DWYER GETS RECORD.

Benny Feilhaber, Graham Zusi and Claudio Bieler all added goals to move Sporting KC within two points of the Eastern Conference lead.

Sporting KC goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum needed to make only one save in the match as Chivas USA lost its fifth straight game and extended its winless streak to 10 games. It has scored in only two of the 10 games.

  1. David Mont, September 13, 2014 at 8:04 a.m.

MLS might sit out the 2015 season...???

The entire league will sit out the whole season?

  2. Andrea Hana, September 13, 2014 at 2:10 p.m.

Yeah, what David said. Where's the editing? That statement makes no sense. Other than that...WHAT A GAME! That was an awesome game, Seattle - Salt Lake!
