WUSA FESTIVALS: Hucles leads San Diego, Pichon paces Philadelphia in L.A.

Angela Hucles scored a stirring goal in her San Diego Spirit debut, and Marinette Pichon scored a goal and assisted another for the Philadelphia Charge as the WUSA Soccer Festivals wrapped up Sunday with a doubleheader in Carson, Calif.

Hucles, traded from Boston following last season's Founders Cup championship, rocketed an 18-yard shot to give San Diego a 27th-minute lead, and Abby Wambach added a second-half goal in the Spirit's 2-1 victory over the Carolina Courage at the Home Depot Center.

Pichon, the 2002 WUSA MVP, tallied in the 26th and set up Kristine Lilly in the 51st to lead the Charge past the San Jose CyberRays, 2-0, in the second game of a doubleheader.

The games drew a crowd of 7,123, including a large contingent of fans from San Diego.

The WUSA Festivals were created to keep the league in the public eye, and provide the players two weekends of competition, while officials work toward a hoped-for relaunch next year or in 2006.

Pichon, who played for New York and Boston in the June 18-19 Festival games in Blaine, Minn., shared the scoring title with Charmaine Hooper, who converted a penalty kick Sunday for Carolina. Pichon and Hooper had five points, with two goals and an assist.

Brandi Chastain suited up but did not play for San Jose because of a foot injury, and CyberRays forward Katie Barnes failed to arrive for the Festival, and attempts to contact her had not been fruitful.

The three Festival dates drew a total attendance of 14,151.
