Orlando City wins draw, Kreis admits error

[MLS EXPANSION] Orlando City will get the No. 1 pick in December's Expansion Draft and January's SuperDraft and New York City FC took the No. 1 pick in the Allocation Ranking. Wednesday's draw used to determine which club goes first in the various player signing mechanisms was not without its moment of levity as on NYCFC's second pick, Coach Jason Kreis misread his notes, picked the wrong mechanism and within seconds admitted his error.

Orlando City's Adrian Heath said the Expansion Draft will allow his club to stock up on what it needs: players with MLS experience. Of the six players it has retained from its 2014 USL PRO regular-season championship team, none has played in MLS.

“We think we've got some really good young players," Heath said. "What we don't have: We don't have any MLS experience. We think with the Expansion Draft we're going to get one or two players that'll help us straightaway. It's important for us that we get some experience.”

2015 Orlando City Roster:
Kevin Molino
Darwin Ceren
Tommy Redding
Tyler Turner
Estrela
Rafael Ramos
Kaka (DP; on loan to Sao Paulo)

2015 New York City FC:
David Villa (DP; on loan to Melbourne City)
Frank Lampard (DP; on loan to Manchester City)
Jeb Brovsky (on loan to Stromsgodset)
Andrew Jacobson (on loan to Stabaek)
Josh Saunders (on loan to San Antonio Scorpions)
Kwame Watson-Siriboe (on loan to Carolina RailHawks)

NYCFC coach Jason Kreis says his club plans to use the No. 1 spot in the Allocation Ranking, used to acquire a returning U.S. national team player or MLS player who moved abroad on a transfer fee and whose rights are therefore no longer owned by his former MLS club.

Kreis picked the Allocation Ranking over the SuperDraft, saying the development of MLS academy programs tying up Homegrown rights to many of the top college players has diluted the college talent pool for the SuperDraft.

On NYCFC's second pick in the draw, Kreis chose the 20th position in the Discovery Ranking, then admitted, "I just made a mistake." Kreis brushed off the slip-up -- he read incorrectly from his list of priorities -- saying the first three rankings were much higher in importance than the other five.
