Red Bulls are no match for Galaxy trio

[MLS: Sunday] Landon Donovan has the all-time MLS goal-scoring record and he tied Steve Ralston's career assist record of 135 assists with three assists in the LA Galaxy's 4-0 win over the New York Red Bulls that moved it back into a tie with the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference standings and Supporters' Shield race. The Red Bulls had no answer at StubHub Center for the trio of Robbie Keane, Gyasi Zardes and in particular Donovan, who combined for all four goals.

Donovan, who has only two more regular-season home games in his final MLS season, gave the Red Bull right backs, rookie Chris Duvall and Richard Eckersley, fits and notched his 133rd career assist on Keane’s chip in the 8th minute, his 134th on Zardes’ goal and his 135th assist on Keane’s late goal to give him 11 assists in his last eight games.

Donovan's goal was his 10th of the year, bringing his record career total to 144. It marked just the second time in his 14-year career he has recorded double digits in goals and assists during a single season.

“Rarely do you see a player with the combination of being able to score goals and create goals," said Galaxy coach Bruce Arena. "Those qualities are excellent. He used to be, I thought, purely a goal scorer. He’s a much better creator now. He’s a good passer of the ball. He’s improved. He’s gotten better. Him and Robbie have been responsible for bring Gyasi along. I think their ability to pass and move is critical to our success.”

Keane's two goals gave him 17 for the season, while Zardes has 16. Keane, Gyasi and Donovan have combined for 43 of the Galaxy's league-high 63 goals.

-- The Houston Dynamo kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a 2-0 win over the Chicago Fire on goals by Omar Cummings and Oscar Boniek Garcia. The Dynamo now trails the fifth-place Red Bulls by five points. The Fire is 10 points below the red line with five games to play.
