Schalke on Tuesday appointed former Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo as its head coach, replacing Jens Keller, who was fired after just under two years in charge of the Royal Blues. Schalke is currently 11th place in the Bundesliga standings, just three points from the relegation zone. Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Hoffenheim proved to be the final straw for Keller.
Di Matteo, who won the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, has been out of work since being dismissed as Blues manager in November 2012. The Italian, who also played for Chelsea for six seasons, will meet his former club in UCL Group G play at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen on Nov 25.
