Report: Man United Could Lose UCL Seeding Status

  • ESPN FC, Thursday, October 9, 2014 10:47 AM
ESPN reports that Manchester United would likely lose its UEFA Champions League seeding if the Red Devils return to Europe’s top club competition next season. United, which began this season ranked sixth in Europe under UEFA’s coefficient system, has already fallen behind last year’s runner up, Atletico Madrid, and is now at risk of being overtaken by German giant Schalke, which only needs to secure one more win and one more draw in this season’s UCL to surpass United.

Meanwhile, some clubs, including Manchester City, are lobbying European governing body UEFA to change its seeding system so that the eight top seeds would be defending the defending UCL champ and the seven winners of the highest-ranked domestic European leagues, which are Spain, England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, France and Russia. If that were the case, Louis van Gaal’s men, who are eight points behind EPL leader Chelsea, would have to win the league in order to gain a UCL seed.
