Catalonia Calls off Independence Vote

Artur Mas, the President of the Catalonian region in Spain, called off an independence vote on Tuesday but said that an unofficial poll would take place next month to gauge secessionist sentiment in the region. Separatists in northeastern Catalonia, which has 7.5 million people, have been trying for years to hold a breakaway vote from Spain to carve out a new country in the Mediterranean, but Mas’ decision means that FC Barcelona no longer has to worry about finding a new league, at least for the time being.
