UEFA Probes Abandoned Euro Qualifier

ESPN reports that UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the soccer federations of both Serbia and Albania after their Euro 2016 qualifier in Belgrade on Tuesday was abandoned due to violence on the field. The Group I encounter, which went ahead despite long-standing political tensions between the two counties, was initially halted just before halftime by a drone carrying a pro-Albania banner hovering over the Partizan Stadium.

However, a melee ensued after Serbia defender Stefan Mitrovic brought down the flag, which seemed to upset a number of Albania players. The violence forced referee Martin Atkinson to lead both teams off the field, as disruption in the stands threatened to boil over, with objects being thrown onto the field at Albania players in the wake of the chaos.

On Wednesday, UEFA spokesman Pedro Pinto confirmed that Europe’s governing body had opened disciplinary proceedings against both national associations, with decisions on the punishments to be issued the following Thursday.
