Timbers' season of home frustration continues

[MLS: Friday] The atmosphere at Portland's Providence Park is second to none in MLS, but the Timbers' home produced nothing but frustration for them and their fans in 2014. Their 0-0 tie with Real Salt Lake in their home finale dealt a potentially fatal blow to their playoff hopes. It also left the Timbers with just five home wins in 17 games. Only Chicago has fewer home wins.

Portland moved temporarily even with Vancouver on points -- and ahead on the second tiebreaker, goal difference -- in the race for the fifth playoff berth in the Western Conference. But the Whitecaps can move back ahead Saturday when they play at San Jose, winless in 13 straight games.

With the Timbers at FC Dallas on the final weekend of the regular season and the 'Caps at home against Colorado, currently riding a 12-game winless streak, the situation does not look good for the Timbers, who were first in the Western Conference in the 2013 regular season.

Portland laid siege to the RSL goal but could not beat Nick Rimando, who made six saves. The one time the Timbers beat Rimando, Luis Gil was on the line to block Norberto Paparatto's header.

Real Salt Lake has clinched a playoff berth but is in a race with FC Dallas for third place. The draw moved RSL two points ahead of FC Dallas, which plays Colorado on Saturday. Third place is important as it will avoid the knockout round and an extra playoff match.

Thursday ...

Lee Nguyen
scored both goals to lead the Revs to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Houston Dynamo in Dominic Kinnear's last game at BBVA Compass Stadium as Dynamo head coach. Nguyen scored his 16th and 17th goals of the year to move ahead of the LA Galaxy's Gyasi Zardes as the top American scorer in MLS.

With the win, New England secured at least a third-place finish in the Eastern Conference. The Revs finished third in 2013, avoiding the knockout round between the four and five seeds.
Giles Barnes gave the Dynamo to a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute with his 11th goal of the season, but the Revs took control of the game after regular starters Charlie Davies (58th minute) and Jermaine Jones (63rd minute) entered the game as subs.

Two minutes after Jones entered, he found left back Kevin Alston, who set up Nguyen at the top of the area, where he had no trouble beating Tyler Deric to the far post. On the winning goal, Davies' shot was cleared off the line by Dynamo right back Kofi Sarkodie, but the rebound fell to Darrius Barnes, who played square pass to Nguyen for his eighth game-winning goal in Revs' 16 wins.
