MLS breaks attendance record with average of 19,147

[CROWD COUNT] Major League Soccer broke its record for average attendance with an average of 19,147 fans a game in 2014, marking the first time it has topped the 19,000-a-game mark. A record eight teams averaged more than 20,000 fans a game, eight teams averaged increases of 5 percent or more as compared to the 2013 season, and five teams broke single-season average attendance records. Also, Chivas USA, which was disbanded on Monday, broke a record for the lowest average attendance in league history.

Seattle led all teams for the sixth straight year with an average of 43,734 fans a game. Toronto FC, Portland, Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas all set club attendance records in 2014.

Eleven MLS teams increased average attendance, while eight teams decreased average attendance. D.C. United led all teams with an average increase of 25 percent. The biggest drop has been experienced by Chivas USA, down 16 percent to a record low of 7,063 fans a game.

    Overall good progress, but Seattle skews the figure. take them out, and its a better reflection of overall league. I'm still concerned by this pool of clubs from Columbus on down, who don't come close to filling their soccer stadiums
