Clattenburg Dropped for Breaching Referee Rules

English referee Mark Clattenburg has been dropped for this weekend’s Premier League games for breaking the English referees’ association (PGMOL) protocol that referees must travel to and from the stadium together to protect their integrity and security. According to the Guardian, Clattenburg drove home alone after officiating West Brom’s 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday so he could watch an Ed Sheeran concert in Newcastle. It also emerged that Clattenburg broke another rule by speaking with Palace coach Neil Warnock on the phone in his car following the game. Premier League rules allow referees to speak to managers, but only when their assistants are present or when given explicit permission.
