Manchester City relinquished its hold on the English League Cup on Wednesday with a poor display in a 2-0 loss at home to Newcastle. The loss capped a bad week for City coach Manuel Pellegrini, whose team has now only taken one point from its past three games in all competitions. Injuries to David Silva and Yaya Toure added insult to injury, as both are now doubtful for Sunday’s derby against city rival Manchester United.
“Of course we must be worried,” Pellegrini said when questioned on the performance and character of his team. “We didn’t win the three games we played this week. We must be worried about that but we must find a solution and address it. My feeling is that we are not playing well. We are in a difficult moment with a lack of trust [confidence]. We are conceding too easy goals and we are not scoring the chances we have to score. It’s a lack of confidence that we must address as soon as possible because we need to continue to be involved in the other competitions.”
Asked if this was the worst display of his reign, the Chilean said: “I don’t know if it is the worst performance but we’ve had three games in a week and they have been very similar. We conceded two goals in each too easily and had a lot of chances to score and didn’t. So it’s a difficult moment, there’s a lack of trust but we are going to recover.”
