BYU makes it three championships in three years

[WCC: Women] BYU clinched its third WCC championship in three years with a 4-0 victory over Pacific on Saturday night. The Cougars are the first not named Portland or Santa Clara to win three consecutive WCC titles.

"I'm really, really proud of this group of girls for the season we've had," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We had a rocky start and the girls have continued to work hard every game. Winning another WCC championship is unbelievable."

Sophomore forward Ashley Hatch scored two goals for the Cougars to give her 17 for the seasons. Freshman Nadia Gomes and Jaiden Thornock each set up the other for the other two goals.

BYU is 7-0-1 in the WCC, which does not hold a postseason tournament. The Cougars face No. 13 Pepperdine in Malibu on Saturday in the final game of the regular season. The Waves picked up a 3-1 win over Loyola Marymount at home in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup on Sunday afternoon. They got a goal and two assists from Lynn Williams.

Santa Clara's 1-0 win over Portland on Mexican international Sofia Huerta's 15th goal of year ended the Pilots' string of 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
