Dubai-based airline Emirates on Tuesday announced that it will not be renewing its World Cup sponsorship with FIFA for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. Emirates was FIFA’s official airline partner for the past three World Cups. “This decision was made following an evaluation of FIFA's contract proposal which did not meet Emirates' expectations,” the airline said in a statement, without elaborating further.
FIFA typically retains six brands as commercial partners signing up for at least two World Cups. Of the six 2014 official World Cup partners -- adidas, Coca-Cola, Emirates, Hyundai, Sony, and Visa -- only Emirates and Sony have not renewed. According to the AP report, Qatar Airways could replace the Dubai carrier as an official FIFA partner.
