Barcelona striker Lionel Messi on Wednesday downplayed the significance of matching Raul’s UEFA Champions League goalscoring record at the age of just 27, by saying that his focus was on getting three points and qualifying for the second round, which is exactly what Barca achieved thanks to his brace in the 2-0 win away to Ajax.
“It's a happy moment for me,” the Barca star said of matching Raul’s record of 71 goals in the competition. “I think it's great but the most important thing was to get the three points so that we will be able to qualify for the next round. We secured the points, therefore I'm happy.”
When asked if there was any one UCL goal that stands out for him, the Argentine said: “I don't remember one goal especially. I always want to score and in the end it's the sum total of them all that I will remember. As I've always said, goals in finals are the best and most powerful memories.”
