[NORTHWESTERN-SIUE: Men] SIUE went through two coaching changes in the offseason and it showed as the Cougars opened the 2014 season without a win in their firstsix games. But SIUE has come on strong late in the year, winning the Missouri Valley title and now its first-round match in the NCAA Tournament, a 1-0 win at Northwestern with a freshman in goalmaking his first career start.
Paul Scheipeter finished a rebound with his left foot for his first career goal in the 81st minute to move SIUE intothe second round Sunday at California.
Sean Donnelly, the former associate coach, had been promoted to head coach following the departure of

After an initial shot from JasonHackett was denied, Scheipeter finished with his left from five yards out.
“When we had a moment late in the half, credit to Jason Hackett and Paul Scheipeter who took advantage ofthe moment,” Korn added. “I’m really proud of the guys.”
Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo, making his first career start, was pressed intoservice because of an injury to senior starter Kent Kobernus. Dal Santo earned his first career shutout, making eight saves in the win.
“He’s beenso good in training the last two months,” Korn said. “For Kyle to step in and have the performance he did tonight, and in his hometown, is awesome. He deserved it and deserved the shutout.”
