Texas Tech moved into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women's Tournament for the first time ever with a 2-1 win over Auburn on a goal by Alli Murphy
in the 87th minute.
“It’s exciting,” Tech head coach Tom Stone
. “We knew we were up against a program that was pretty comfortable here. [Auburn] played us a
great game, scored a nice goal and really made us work for everything we got. I couldn’t be more proud of this team’s attitude and effort today.”
With the win,
Tech advances to play Florida, a 3-1 winner over California in the other game in Gainesville on Friday.
The Tigers opened with an early lead thanks to a Tori Ball
goal off a failed clearance in just the sixth minute. Paige Strahan
brought Tech back into the match as she recorded the equalizer with
a shot from 23 yards in the 31st minute.
“Paige’s goal is something she’s done for the four years of her career,” Stone said of his senior captain.
“She scores the biggest goals for us, and we were so excited when she basically put us back in the game right before the half.”

had the third goal for the Gators. Celeste Boureille
had the lone goal for the Golden Bears.
