[ROUNDUP: Sunday] Top-ranked UCLA needed a goal from
Sam Mewis in the 88th minute to
beat Pepperdine and move into the Division I Women's Tournament quarterfinals, where the Bruins will face Virginia, a 7-0 winner over Kentucky. Other quarterfinal pairings: Stanford-Florida, Texas
A&M-Penn State and Florida State-South Carolina.
Second Round: Roundup Mewis, the Pac-12 Player of the Year, scored her team-high 16th of the
season and her seventh game-winning goal.
"Sam Mewis is such a great finisher," said UCLA head coach
Amanda Cromwell. "She's has such a good
presence in there; it's hard to take the ball off of her. When you have her get the ball inside the 18, there's a great chance she's going to score."
Bruin goalkeeper Katelyn
Rowland broke the NCAA record for single-season solo shutouts with her 19th of the season. She also extended her shutout streaks to a school-record 10 games and 937 consecutive scoreless minutes.

-- Virginia, the nation's leading-scoring team, pounded Kentucky, 7-0, to move into the NCAA
Tournament quarterfinals for the third time in four years. Junior
Makenzy Doniak set the school record for points in a game with eight, recording three goals
and two assists. The eight points also gave her 48 points (19 goals, 10 assists) on the season, another Cav record. Senior
Morgan Brian added two goals and two
assists in her final game at Kloeckner Stadium, where Virginia won its 32nd consecutive game for the longest active streak in the nation.
-- For the second consecutive match, Stanford
won, 1-0, on a goal by
Lo'eau LaBonta in a penalty situation. LaBonta scored on her team-leading 13th goal of the season on a first-half rebound of her own
saved penalty kick to lead the Cardinal past Pac-12 rival Washington.
-- Goals by
Havana Solaun and
Savannah
Jordan gave Florida a two-goal lead over Texas Tech after just 21 minutes, but the Gators needed a goal by
Annie Speese from 20 yards to out away the Red
Raiders, 3-2, after they had rallied on goals by
Sara Summers and
Janine Beckie. After scoring just three goals in the
regular season, Speese has now scored in all three NCAA Tournament matches.
-- A
Kristin Grubka goal in the 60th minute was all that was needed as
second-ranked Florida State defeated UCF, 1-0. With the win, the Seminoles advance to the Elite Eight for the 10th year in a row, continuing the longest active streak in the nation.
-- Penn State will make its 10th quarterfinal appearance after topping Virginia Tech, 2-1, on U.S. U-20
Mallory Weber's header in the 70th minute. Costa
Rican international
Raquel Rodriguez had given the Nittany Lions the lead on a breakaway, but
Ashley Meier evened the
score for the Hokies, the lone unseeded team that reached the round of 16.
