Anteaters stun Cardinal with first win in nine meetings

[STANFORD-UC IRVINE: Men] Michael Sperber scored the first goal of his career in the 97th minute to lift UC Irvine to a 1-0 win over sixth-seeded Stanford Sunday night in Palo Alto. The Cardinal, the Pac-12 champion, is the only one of four Pac-12 seeded teams to fall at the first hurdle.

Stanford finished with a 11-9 edge in shots, but the Anteater defense did a good job of silencing Jordan Morris, who had just returned from earning his first cap with the U.S. national team. Keeper Michael Breslin needed to save only three shots.

The Anteaters tied the 2008 UCI squad with their 16th win on the season. It also marked the first-ever win over the Cardinal in nine games.

"The defensive effort for the entire team I'm really proud of," UCI coach Chris Volk. "Today we had a defensive midfielder scoring the game-winner. We've got a nice blend of players and a good balance."

UC Irvine's next stop will be Rhode Island, where it will face 11th-seeded Providence on Sunday.
