Providence advances to final eight for first time

A Markus Naglestad 30-yard free kick goal late in the second half gave No. 11 Providence a 1-0 in over UC Irvine that moved the Friars into the quarterfinals for the first time ever. The Friars' 15 wins are the most in program history.

Providence’s best chance in the early going came in the 19th minute on a quick counterattack as Dominik Machado cracked a shot that beat Anteater goalkeeper Michael Breslin but struck the crossbar. Later in the first half, Naglestad fired a shot from 20-yards out that eluded a diving Breslin but went just wide of the far post.

UC Irvine's best chance came in the 53rd minute when Dennis Martinez whipped a cross into the box that Bryan Breslin headed toward the top corner, but Keasel Broome got his finger tips on it to keep the game scoreless.

Providence finally broke through in the 77th minute when Naglestad sent a free kick from 25-yards out over the Anteater wall and back down past a diving Breslin for his 10th goal of the season and his first of the NCAA Tournament.

With the victory, the Friars will face No. 3 seed Michigan State in East Lansing on Friday afternoon.
