Donovan named to MLS Best XI for record seventh time

Landon Donovan was named to the 2014 MLS Best XI for a record seventh time, joining LA Galaxy teammates Omar Gonzalez and Robbie Keane on the team. Only four players -- Bill Hamid, Lee Nguyen, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Obafemi Martins -- are first-time selections.

Donovan, who had 10 goals and league-leading 19 assists to finish as the all-time league leader in both categories, surpassed Dwayne De Rosario, who has been on the Best XI six times.

Keane was named for the third year in a row, while Gonzalez and Portland's Diego Valeri were also repeat selections.  Gonzalez was the only member of the U.S. World Cup team to be selected. The Best XI consists of six Americans and five foreigners. Like Donovan, Thierry Henry is retiring and was named to the Best XI for a third time.
MLS players, club leadership and media members voted on the Best XI.
Bill Hamid (1), D.C. United (MLS Goalkeeper of the Year)
Chad Marshall (3), Seattle Sounders
Bobby Boswell (2), D.C. United (MLS Defender of the Year)
Omar Gonzalez (4), LA Galaxy
Lee Nguyen (1), New England Revolution
Landon Donovan (7), LA Galaxy

Thierry Henry (3) New York Red Bulls
Robbie Keane (3) LA Galaxy

Other awards went to D.C. United’s Ben Olsen (Coach of the Year) for leading his club to the Eastern Conference regular-season title after it won just three games in 2013, and Portland's Rodney Wallace (Comeback Player of the Year).
