Sounders reward Schmid with a new multiyear contract

Last year, Sigi Schmid was lucky to keep his job. This year, after the Seattle Sounders' exit from the MLS playoffs in the Western Conference final, he was rewarded with a new multiyear contract. That's the difference a year makes for the only coach the Sounders have had in their six years in MLS.

During a season-ending press conference on Thursday, team co-owner and general manager Adrian Hanauer confirmed that Schmid would stay with the team and agreed to a multiyear contract to remain with the club.

The Sounders won their first Supporters' Shield and fourth U.S. Open Cup trophy but came up short in the playoffs, falling to the LA Galaxy in the Western Conference final on an away goal after the teams were tied, 2-2, after two games.

Earlier in the day, the Sounders announced that they were declining the contract options of eight players from its current roster. The moves leave 22 players from the 2014 team currently under contract for next season, giving the club a roster that features 23 players, including recently signed Homegrown product Victor Mansaray.
The club is declining contract options of the following players: goalkeepers Josh Ford and Marcus Hahnemann; defenders Onyekachi Apam and Djimi Traore; forwards Tristan Bowen, Sean Okoli, Cam Weaver and Eriq Zavaleta, who played on loan to Chivas USA. Additionally, defender Jalil Anibaba is out of contract.

Traore might remain with the club in a coaching role. Assistant Ezra Hendrickson will take over the Sounders 2 in USL PRO.
