The AP reports that Swiss lawmakers on Friday passed legislation that would allow greater scrutiny of bank accounts held by governing bodies for sports (such as FIFA) and their leaders. Themeasure, passed in a 128-62 vote in Switzerland’s lower chamber of parliament, was prompted by FIFA’s bribery scandals in recent years.

The news means that FIFA President SeppBlatter and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach are now classified as “politically exposed persons” in wider legislation covering money-laundering.“Normally these rules are for politicians and dictators,” Swiss lawmaker Roland Buechel told the AP, adding that the law also applies to FIFA executive committee members andemployees of sports federations.

While the IOC issued a statement in support of the new law, FIFA has yet to say anything publicly about it. “The IOC fully supports and welcomes thisimportant move by Swiss lawmakers – it is in line with what the IOC already does,” the IOC statement read.
