USL PRO champs win approval to expand Sac stadium

USL PRO champion Sacramento Republic FC is so popular it has it outgrown 8,000-seat Bonney Field at Cal Expo, the aging home of the California State Fair. Cal Expo Board of Directors approved expansion plans to add up to 4,200 seats.

In its first season of play, Republic FC shattered the USL PRO attendance record with an average of 11,293 fans a game at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium and Bonney Field. The 20,000-seat Hughes Stadium was the temporary home before Bonney Field was ready in midseason.

Bonney Field needs to be expanded to accommodate all the requests for season tickets. Republic FC expects more than 9,000 season tickets in 2015. The actual capacity after expansion is expected to be around 11,500.

Sacramento is one of three cities vying to be approved as an MLS expansion team. If it is successful, a new stadium will be built in downtown Sacramento.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson has been leading the effort to win approval for a soccer stadium located in the Sacramento railyards, just blocks away from where the NBA Kings' arena is going up in the downtown area.
