Lagerwey succession begins at Real Salt Lake

General manager Garth Lagerwey is not even out the door -- his future home is reported to be the Seattle Sounders -- but Real Salt Lake has already named a successor to head the technical side of the perennial MLS contender. Assistant coach Craig Waibel has been promoted to the post of technical director.

Waibel, who won MLS four titles with the LA Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo in an eight-year career, was hired as an assistant coach before the 2014 season after previously working as an assistant at the University of Michigan and University of Washington.

"Craig is an extraordinarily bright, successful individual whose teams have been winners at every step of his career," said RSL owner Dell Loy Hansen in a statement. "He is the ideal person to work with [head coach] Jeff Cassar, [president] Bill Manning and myself to evolve this club forward, building upon the incredible foundation established during the last 10 years by Garth Lagerwey and countless others."

Manning said RSL fans will love Waibel: "He is a bright, witty, self-effacing gentleman who is respected and admired throughout the soccer industry.

In addition to Waibel's promotion, Elliot Fall was promoted from director of soccer operations to his new post as assistant general manager. Lagerwey's contract with RSL expires at the end of the year.

It's been a busy offseason for RSL, which lost four starters in the first week after the 2014 season ended: Nat Borchers (traded to Portland), Chris Wingert and Ned Grabavoy (picked by New York City FC in the Expansion Draft) and Robbie Findley (taken by Toronto FC in the Re-Entry Draft).

On Tuesday might, Hansen told ESPN700, RSL's flagship radio station, that the club gave 2014 U.S. World Cup team members Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando -- two other long-time players -- three-year contract extensions and was working to sign Ecuadoran top scorer Joao Plata to a five-year deal and buy out his contract.
