Perhaps the most surprising inclusion in FIFA’s 2014 Team of the Year was Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz. The Brazil international was widely criticized for his performances at the 2014 World Cup, and prior to that, spent much of the first half of 2014 on the bench at Chelsea. After transferring to PSG over the summer for $75 million, the 27-year-old has made 22 appearances so far this season, being mostly used as a center back alongside compatriot Thiago Silva, who also earned a spot in the FIFA Team of the Year, which is voted on by FifPro, the world players’ union, and included 23,383 votes from 58 countries.
