MLS Trade Central: Rapids' midfield changes continue

The Colorado Rapids continued to make moves to their midfield with the sale of Spanish midfielder Jose Mari to La Liga club Levante.

Mari, 27, was a big help for the Rapids in midfield with four goals in 20 appearances but injuries limited his contributions. His left-footed half-volley against the Vancouver Whitecaps in April was a candidate for AT&T Goal of the Year.

"It has been a wonderful year for me in Denver, with the Rapids, and one that I will always remember," Jose Mari said in a statement.

Four days after acquiring Marcelo Sarvas, a two-time MLS champion with the LA Galaxy, the Rapids added a second experienced midfielder with the acquisition of 28-year-old Sam Cronin from San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for allocation money.

Cronin has played six seasons in the league with Toronto FC and the Quakes. In 2014, the central midfielder played the most minutes for a field player (2,537), and passed John Doyle on the Earthquakes’ all-time games started list with 130. He earned two caps for the USA at the 2009 Gold Cup.

Dillon Powers, the 2013 MLS Rookie of the Year, just obtained his Italian passport, suggesting he might be headed to Europe.
