Open Cup: Five amateur teams pull upsets

Five amateur teams -- the PDL’s Jersey Express and Ventura County Fusion, USASA’s PSA Elite and Chula Vista FC and NPSL’s Chattanooga FC -- knocked off pro USL teams to advance to the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The night also featured a record crowd. Sacramento Republic FC set another mark when it drew 10,386 fans for the 4-2 win over the Sonoma County Sol, breaking the record for the largest second-round crowd. The old mark (9,339) was set by MLS's Columbus Crew in 2001. Tommy Stewart scored a hat trick for Republic FC but later had to be stretchered off the field with an ankle injury after being fouled late in the match.

The biggest surprises came in Southern California, where three amateur teams advanced: Chula Vista FC, PSA Elite and Ventura County Fusion.

Chula Vista FC was a 3-0 victor over Arizona United in Scottsdale. Alberto Diaz scored twice and Angel Pinal added the third goal for Chula Vista FC, which is located on the USA-Mexico border. It also got a great game from goalkeeper Sebastian Gonzalez.

At least, one amateur team is assured of moving into the fourth round against MLS opposition. The VC Fusion hosts PSA Elite in the third round.

PSA Elite won, 2-1, over the Orange County Blues on goals by Michael Salazar and Mats Bjurman. Chula Vista FC and PSA Elite were the only teams from among the 10 USASA entrants to win their first-round games and now they are in the third round.

The Fusion advanced with a 2-1 decision over the LA Galaxy II in overtime on a goal by highly touted Ghanaian Abu Danladi, a freshman at UCLA.

The Galaxy II was one of two MLS second teams from the USL to fall. New York Red Bulls II lost, 1-0, to the Jersey Express on a goal by Chris Karcz header off of a corner kick in the 59th minute. NYRB II started two U-18 academy players, Derrick Etienne and Juan Sebastian Sanchez.

Seattle Sounders FC 2 avoided an upset when it held off the Kitsap Pimas, 4-2, in overtime. Mike Ramos equalized for the Pumas in stoppage time, but Sounders FC 2 won on goals by Pablo Rossi from a free kick -- his specialty -- and Andy Craven.
