Road to Vancouver: Mexico takes 14 U.S. players

Mexico will take 14 players who were born or raised in the United States, including late additions Emily Alvarado, a 16-year-old keeper from El Paso, Texas, and Maria Sanchez, an Idaho State freshman, to the Women's World Cup.

The squad includes eight players from California, three from Texas, two from Arizona and Sanchez, who hails from American Falls, Idaho.

The team reported to training on Friday in Mexico and will play Costa Rica in friendlies on Monday and Thursday.

Eleven players were on El Tricolor Femenil team that participated in the 2011 Women’s World Cup, including forward Monica Ocampo and midfielder Sandra Stephany Mayor. Besides the 14 players raised in the U.S. youth system, Ocampo is one of four players who moved to the United States as a teenager to play club ball -- in her case, W-League club FC Indiana -- or attend college.

Coach Leo Cuellar called in five players from last year's U-20 Women's World Cup team, including Cecilia Santiago, who played in goal for Mexico at the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany. Another U-20, Tanya Samarzich, who has transferred from USC to Kentucky, was a late scratch after suffering a foot injury in a scrimmage against Canada.
