Germany rests trio of stars for U.S. friendly

Germany's national team coach Joachim Loew named a 20-player squad for the June 10 friendly against the USA and a Euro 2016 qualifier against Gibraltar in Portugal three days later. It includes 13 players from the 2014 World Cup champion team but is missing stars Thomas Mueller, Toni Kroos and Manuel Neuer, who have all been given a rest.

"I’ve been able to count on them a lot recently," Loew said. "They deserve a break."

The absence of Mueller and Neuer leaves only three players from German champion Bayern Munich in the team: Jerome Boateng, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Goetze.
